About our shop

The Island of Eday is situated around 16 miles from Kirkwall taking an hour and a quarter by ferry daily, or by an 8-minute flight on Wednesdays.

The Island is approximately 8 miles long and 3 miles wide and has a population of 150. It has a primary school, youth hostel, pub, heritage centre and tearoom as well as the community owned shop, post office and fuel pumps.

The Eday Community Co-op was established in 1981 by Eday Community Enterprises Ltd in response to the threatened loss of the island's only shop. Through selling £25 shares money was raised locally and together with funding from the Highlands & Islands Development Board and Local Council enabled the community to buy the business and extend the existing building.

The community shop opened in 1982 and since then its profits have been re-invested to gradually buy new equipment and extend and improve the building. Funding has also been provided through the Council's Rural Shop Scheme.

As a co-op the shop has a voluntary management committee that oversees things and has become a corporate member of the Co-operative Group which allows it to order goods directly through the Group's supply chain. Being so remote, it would be impossible to get a regular supply of good quality goods at a reasonable cost without this support from the Co-op.

The shop has become a successful business, estimated to account for 90% of the islander's food shopping. It currently employs 9 part-time staff and as well as being valued for its important social role it has become has become the cornerstone of the island's viability.

Recently we have installed a 6-kilowatt wind turbine behind the shop which helps towards our electricity costs.
