Appin Community Co-op was set up in 1983 with funds from the sale of local shares and a grant from Highlands & Islands Development Board (now HIE). By 2001 the shop had built up a reserve fund which it used together with some grant funding to build a new shop. The shop sells a wide range of goods and employs 4 staff.
It also provides a delivery service twice per week for elderly residents and has set up a separate Community Trust Fund into which it donates a proportion of its annual profit for use in local projects such as the playing fields, shinty strips, out of school activities etc.

After the Tayvallich Shop, Post Office and Coffee Shop had been on the market for over a year with no offers to buy, local people were successful in raising money through grants and local fund raising to take the business into community ownership. The shop is leased to private operators and offers a wide range of goods as well as shower facilities and advance ordering for the many people that visit the area.
